            December 2012

  Editor: Kristin S.                       www.quiltsqq.com              President: Martha S.

December 10th Program- Christmas Party at the Bend Park and Rec Building, 799 SW Columbia Street in Bend, start time 6:00, see article below.

Fat Quarter drawing for December- Santa Baby

President’s Message

Martha S.

You can’t depend on your judgment when your imagination is out of focus – Mark Twain

Every year it seems the Holiday fabric selections get better and better with fresh colors and designs, yet the feeling of fun and tradition remains.  My role as your President has brought the same feeling of fun, tradition and respect for our craft and artistry.  I had never imagined this when I attended my first Guild meeting 5 years ago and knew no one. I was a bit overwhelmed with the talent presented during show and tell and thought I might be over my head to think I could be a part of this group.  I was a cautious quilter then, following patterns carefully and selecting materials that were ‘safe’ and with a specific purpose in mind.     Now I reach for whatever colorful fabric and free design that comes into my imagination, with no particular purposed outcome.  This change came from inspirations from so many fabulous quilters in this guild. For two years I have been honored to serve as Guild President.  I value and appreciate the enthusiasm and energy of so many volunteers, quilters and shop owners who supported the guild and journeyed with me, changing the task of the office into the joy of the same.  I hope that my stories and poems and occasional tune didn’t bore you.  I had a great time and now look forward to sitting in the audience with my many new friends.  Maybe I’ll finish the sweater I started two years ago!

Thank you, thank you.  Thank you so much.  Love you all!

She is a friend of my mind... The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order. - Toni Morrison

2013 Guild Retreat

Barb P. and Jill M.

Thanks to all that have signed up for retreat, March 8, 9 & 10 at the 7th Mountain Resort, and paid your deposit. We will need the remainder of the fee by the February 2013 meeting. We can't wait; it's going to be a great sewing, eating and all around fun time!!!

Community Quilts

Karen F. Diana L. and Jane D.

Thanks to the 20+ women who came to the November 14th Community Quilts day to work on baby quilts.    The flannel was flying and the sewing machines were humming.   And the potluck lunch we had was terrific.

You are welcome to bring finished baby quilts--and any other finished Community Quilts--to the December 10th Guild Christmas party.   We plan to distribute quilts the week after the party, so the more quilts the merrier.    Remember that your work on a community quilt puts your name in the drawing for the special quilted wall hanging donated to the Guild by Maggie Ball.   The drawing will be held at the January 2013 meeting.

We will have the usual Community Quilts day on Wednesday, December 12th, at Nativity Lutheran Church (corner of SE Knott and Brosterhaus), starting at 11 a.m.   Everyone is welcome and if you don't have a current quilting project, we have kits as well as quilt tops that need quilting.   Thank you to everyone for a great Community Quilts year.

Community Food Drive

Diana L.

In December, let’s have a big collection of food for the Food Pantry at Nativity Lutheran Church.  This is the location where MBQG does Community Quilt sewing and the church helps out so many people.  Suggestions for December include:  Canned pumpkin pie filling, sweet potatoes, fruits and vegetables.  Thank you for all your donations—we also accept monetary donations.

Our Guild Library

Linda M.

There will be no library raffle at the December meeting.  If you wish to return or check out a book in December, please go to QuiltWorks and use the library cabinet located there.  A number of donated books have been added to the library:   On the Surface, by Wendy Hill (thread embellishment and fabric manipulation); The Careless Quilter, by Kristin Miller (decide-as-you-sew, design-as-you-go quiltmaking; Appliqué & Embroidery Fundamentals, by Janice Vaine (step-by-step instructions for appliquéing the entire alphabet and adding embellishments);  Two-Hour Applique, by Leslie Allen (containing over 200 original appliqué designs);  and Scrap Patchwork & Quilting, by Marti Mitchell (a variety of scrap quilt patterns).  New books added to the library:  One Line at a Time, Encore, by Charlotte Warr Andersen (35 new geometric machine-quilting designs); Civil War Legacies, by Carol Hopkins (quilts patters for reproduction fabrics); and Deck the Halls, Quilts to Celebrate Christmas, by Cheryl Almgren Taylor (contains pieced and appliquéd patterns for quilts, table runners, mantel runner, etc.).

Programs

Kayla H.

  • ·       January - Anna Bates, a Central Oregon quilter, will be here to show her work.  Anna is going to do a trunk show for us and talk about how she uses wool.
  • ·       February - Sara Wiener from Sara Bella Upcycled.  Sara Bella Upcycled is devoted to the art of upcycling plastic bags and banners into beautiful, fashionable and functional items. From tote bags to aprons, wallets to belts.

Workshops

Lisa N.

We are bringing some big names to Central Oregon in 2013!  Ann Shaw, a quilter from Vancouver, Washington who teaches the Ruth B. McDowell style of quilt design, will be teaching a workshop on April 8, 2013.  Visit her website at www.annshawquilting.com for photos of her beautiful quilts, information on the artist and her blog.  Marsha McCloskey, who is well known for her gorgeous feathered stars, will be giving a workshop to our Guild on May 13, 2013.  Her website can be found at www.marshamccloskey.com where you'll find all kinds of inspiration.  And, Joen Wolfrom, one of the foremost color gurus, will visit us in September.  All workshops will be held at the Bend Park and Recreation building on Columbia Street.  Workshop details are being finalized but we'll have lots of information for you in January.  Happy holidays!

Caring Corner

Libby S.

We were sad to hear about Gail R.’s (Sew Many Quilts) sister passing away.  Our thoughts are with Gail.

Linda M. is recovering from surgery and we hope to see her at the next meeting.  Alice Pedersen was in the hospital with pneumonia but she is home now and starting to feel better.  It would be nice to send a card of support.
