Quilt Show in the Park

Message from the President

Martha S.

Summer time, and the quiltin’ is easy.  Blocks are jumping and the cotton thread’s nigh.

I know you’ll have a great time at our quilt show and I look forward to seeing all of your fabulous quilts.  Don’t every think your quilt is ‘not worthy’ because there is beauty in every one of them as well as your heart and perhaps a little angst in them.    Please share them with us.    I’ve met so many new-to-Bend quilters over the summer and I encourage you all to meet and greet these visitors at our show.

Please, please buy your share of raffle quilt tickets.   There is so much opportunity if you win.   The quilt is valued at $599.99 and could be a really nice gift or tax donation.   Plus it’s a wonderful piece of art with so much detail.   The two antique quilts for sale at the show are quite a bargain and the total proceeds go directly to the guild.   These quilts are valued much higher by respectable dealers.    The proceeds from both fund our guild activities and keep you informed, entertained and give you an opportunity to give back to our greater community.  Thank you for doing your part!

Come early, stay late, help out with the various activities and spend time with your fellow quilters at the show.  Get to know their special talents.   Have some fun and great food too.   See you there.

***Sorry for the late newsletter this month!  I’ve been on vacation and mainly wanted to remind all of our upcoming QUILT SHOW and honor our relationship with the CO shops that so generously support our guild.  See you on Saturday! ***Susan M.

Remember to stop by the Raffle Ticket table on quilt day.  We need to excite the visitors with our quilt on display.

With their sale we will have more revenue to provide more quilt fabric for our community quilt workers.  Enjoy the display of quilts and be sure to stop by for more tickets!

Community Quilts

Mary T., Karen F, and Norma W.

Ah Ha!!  No meeting in August.  You know what that means.  That means you’re hopefully going to turn in dozens of Community Quilts in September!!!   Right???  We hope so.  It’s about time to make another delivery to the agencies we serve, and we could certainly use 75-100 more quilts!!!   Come on, Ladies.  Pleaseeee!!  Sadly, many members have not turned in one quilt this year.

Our agencies need your support.  Sizes and themes needed are shown on the CommQlts page on the website.  Please continue to follow those guidelines—no wall hangings, please.

Community Quilts’ Day is Wednesday, August 10, from 10-3 (new earlier time) at the Nativity Lutheran Church (directions on the CommQlts page on the website).  Bring your BSS, lunch, beverage, food donation, and the project on which you are working.  If you bring a finished top, we'll match it with backing and batting and help you pin it (bring your pins) while we laugh along.

Come one, come ALL!!

2011 MTQG Quilt Show

Gayle G.

Our 28th annual “Quilts in the Park” Quilt Show will be held THIS Saturday, August 13th in Pioneer Park from 10am-4pm. Set-up starts at 7am, and everyone is encouraged to come and help us build the show.

Quilt Collection will take place on Friday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhous Road, corner of Knott Rd. from 10am-3pm. Forms are available at Quiltworks and BJs or they can be filled out at the collection site. Collection of items for sale will take place at the same time. Those forms are available on the website.

Our traditional POTLUCK will take place at the show. Last names A to L = Main dishes. Last names M to Z = Salads. Those so inclined may bring a dessert as well. If you can bring a cooler with ice, that will help us keep the chilled dishes cold until they are needed.

Bring a lawn chair and plan to spend the day. Invite your family and friends to stop by, and see the show!

Quilt Show Sales Table

Jane D., Bev P., Jean M.

As usual, Guild members and non-members may sell quilt and sewing related items during the August 13th Quilt Show.  Sale items will be collected on Friday August 12th at Nativity Lutheran Church from 10-3 (same hours as quilt collection).  Instructions and a sales item inventory form are posted on the Guild website.  If you have questions, please contact Jane D, Bev P or Jean M.

Our Guild Library

Linda M.

There is no raffle book due to the quilt show. The new library book for August is S is for Scraps by Gayle Bong. This book contains 18 great quilt patterns for using up scraps and has the author’s techniques for Twin Peaks and Thirtysomething piecing. Thank you for supporting the Guild Library.

Workshops

Lisa N.

We have a few available spots for the workshop with Lorraine Torrence on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  She will be teaching a "Collage Curves Mini Quilt Class" in which she will demonstrate her technique for creating curvy edge shapes, raw edges together, with self made bias tape covering the raw edges.  Lorraine lectures throughout the country and we are lucky to have her for this one-day workshop!  More information on her background and class samples can be found at www.lorrainetorrence.com.  The cost of the workshop is $50 and will include a light lunch.  Any available spots will be opened up to other Guilds in a few weeks so let me know ASAP if you are interested.

Also, we still have space in the "Fabric in the Mind's Eye in Five Easy Pieces," a jacket workshop with Sharon Baker and Elaine Bowles from Boise, Idaho.  The workshop will be held on Monday, October 10, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Check out www.kapamaker.com for pictures of their beautiful work and get inspired to make one for yourself!

If you signed up for the workshop "Outside the Lines" with Jean Wells Keenan, please bring your check for $15 to the September Guild meeting. The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  We have far more people that would like to attend than slots, so your check will hold your spot.  More information on location and other details to follow.

QuiltWorks

926 NE Greenwood Ave., Bend 541-728-0527

Our August Featured Quilter is JoAnn Marshall. JoAnn’s specialty is small quilts, especially miniatures.  She particularly loves the process of making quilt tops...piecing the best part.  She is a hand quilter who also knows how to machine quilt! The group exhibit will be the Material Girls 2011 Challenge.

Our BIG NEWS is that we are excited to share with everyone is that our Quilt Gallery has been recognized by the City of Bend for a Bend Arts, Beautification and Cultural Award. From the city’s website  “The Arts, Beautification and Culture Commission was created by the Bend City Council in January, 2002. The Council's purpose establishing this commission was to create an advisory commission to make recommendations on the appropriate role for the City of Bend to take in supporting Art, Beautification and Culture, to annually identify appropriate City involvement in arts, community beautification and culture with emphasis on community gatherings, events, cultural tourism and the arts.”

Our class schedule will be out in early August and there will be something for everyone. Mark your calendars for our Open House September 9th and 10th. We’ll have our class samples up, a fun “make and take it” project and representatives of different quilt and sewing groups to share info with you.

Thanks again for your support and patronage!
