April 8th Program- Ann Shaw

Don’t forget your nametag, show and tell and food drive donation

Fat Quarter drawing for April- Pastel Checks

President’s Message

Shannon P.

Happy Easter!  I hope everyone is enjoying this spring.  The past couple of rainy days have lent themselves well to staying in front of the sewing machine, sewing on a binding, and surfing the net for new ideas!

We are still in need of a Non-profit Coordinator.  Please let me know if you are interested, I would be happy to give some information as to what the position entails.

We also need some volunteers to sell raffle tickets and volunteers for the quilt show.  Contact either Mary Ann B. (raffle quilt) or Susan M. (quilt show).

"You can't use up creativity.  The more you use, the more you have." Maya Angelou

Hospitality for the April 8 Guild Meeting

Erin B. and Lindsey K.

Mary Ella S. and Kate M. have volunteered to bring beverages and Sally B., Lani S., and Jan D. have volunteered to bring snacks. If you find you are not able to bring what you volunteered to contribute, please call Erin B. or Lindsey K.  The meeting begins at 6:45 pm.  As always, please turn your cell phones off before the meeting.

Community Food Drive for the April 8 Guild Meeting

Diana L.

At the April meeting, we will collect canned meat (tuna, chicken, etc.) for the Food Pantry.  In February, the Pantry served 553 people.  That takes a lot of food and volunteer time!  We accept any food or monetary donations.  Thank you for all of your contributions.

Community Quilts- Next Meeting April 10, 11-3 at Nativity Lutheran Church

Jane D., Diana L., Bev P., Lora F., or Jean M.

FOUR Important Things to Read!

1.   Mystery Quilts started in February:   Please bring finished mystery quilts--or even just your finished top--to the April 8th Guild meeting.   It will be fun to see them all together.

2.  POTLUCK:  On April 10th, in conjunction with the regular monthly Community Quilt day, we are having a potluck.   Bring whatever food item you like.  Plates, cups, and utensils will be provided.   As always, Community Quilts will be held from 11-3 at Nativity Lutheran Church, located at the corner of SE Knott and Brosterhaus.   If you don't have a project already, we'll help you get started on one.

3.   Quilt distribution coming up:   We are planning to distribute quilts in April.   If you have a community quilt almost done, here's your incentive to finish it and get it out of your sewing room!

4.   Another Mystery--in May:   Make plans to come to the May 15th Community Quilt day because we are planning another Mystery Quilt project.  Bev P is again the lead for this project, so you know it will be fun and interesting.

Questions?   Talk with or Email Bev P, Jane D, Diana L, Jean M or Lora F.

2013 MBQG 30th Anniversary Celebration- June 10

Rosie W. and Kathleen G.

Do you have some digital photos of guild events on your computer that you would be willing to share? If so email them to Kayla H. If you have too many to email contact her for more info.  The following is the text from the fliers that we are placing at the quilt shops.

Calling all FORMER members of

Mt Bachelor Quilters’ Guild . . .

We are INVITING all past members to help us

celebrate our Thirtieth Anniversary in 2013!

The participation of many quilters over the years has made the guild what it is today – a thriving, multi-talented group with lots of activities.  We have several events planned for the celebration.

On June 10th, we will have a historical presentation/anniversary celebration program.   It will be a chance to reunite with long-time quilting friends and give our newer members a glimpse of the past.

For the July 13 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, our show liaison, Martha Sanders, is gathering quilts for a special exhibit called “Mt Bachelor Quilters’ Guild 30th Anniversary Celebration of Quilts”.  We will display quilts that won the “Viewers’ Choice” award at our guild’s previous shows.  If you would like to show a quilt, email her as soon as possible at MBQG.30years@gmx.com, and she will send you details.

The final event of our 30th Anniversary Celebration/Reunion will be our annual quilt show, August 10th, at Pioneer Park.  All former members are invited to join us for the show and picnic.  “Viewers’ Choice” winners and “Challenge Quilt” winners from the guild’s previous shows will be featured in a special exhibit called “A Panorama of Our Best” – these can be the same ones as shown at Sisters show, but can also include other quilts.   If you have a quilt for this display, please email us as soon as possible at MBQG.30years@gmx.com – we would love to include it.

2013 Quilt Challenge-Quilts Due July 15

Rosie W. and Kathleen G. for Sylvia K.

"Memories of Mount Bachelor Quilters’ Guild" is the 2013 Quilt Challenge theme. This is a theme that allows you to use your imagination and have fun! Did you take a guild workshop and have some leftover blocks you can use for something new, or learn a technique that you have wanted to use again? Did a speaker or fellow guild member show something you have wanted to try and haven’t got around to doing?  Was there a fun (or funny) experience you can portray in a “picture” quilt? Was there someone in the guild who influenced you that you would like to honor?

The dimensions for the quilt are to be a minimum of 36 inches on any side and a maximum of 60 inches on any one side.  Participants can use any type of technique but all work must be done only by the entrant. All quilts entries are due on or before the July Guild Meeting which will be on July 15 (note this is the third Monday).

2013 30th Anniversary Mt. Bachelor Quilt Show in the Park- August 10

Susan M.

Please sign up for volunteer positions at the April 8th guild meeting.  The show runs so smoothly with many helping hands and with this being our 30th Anniversary, we want it to be EXTRA SPECIAL.

2013 Quilt Raffle Ticket Sales- Tickets available at the April 8 Guild Meeting

Mary Ann B.

The raffle quilt will be displayed during Shop Hop at both QuiltWorks and BJs.  I hope to have it at Sew Many Quilts as well.  We will need ticket sellers for both of those shops.

The raffle quilt will also be displayed at the same two shops during the July quilt week at Sisters.  Again, we will need tickets sellers.

The tickets will be available during the April 8th meeting.  They are priced at $1.00 or 6 for $5.00.  The tickets have been packaged in groups of 24, so $20.00 would be that price.  Please bring your money or your check to the April meeting.

Our Guild Library

Linda M.

The April raffle book is Simply Triangles, by Barbara H. Cline.  This book contains 11 deceptively easy quilts featuring stars, daisies and pinwheels.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  New book added to the library this month is The Complete Photo Guide to Art Quilting by Susan Stein.  Books donated by members added to the library this month are:  Scrap Quilts, the Art of Making Do, by Roberta Horton, Gooseberry Hill, patterns for stuffed animals & dolls, by Kathy Pace, and American Quilts & Coverlets, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Thank you for your support of the Guild library.

Programs

Kayla H.

April 8- Ann Shaw will be here to present a program for the guild. Ann is known for her pictorial quilts. Ann was showcased as one of the Artists in Residence at the 2012 Empty Spools Seminar hosted in Asilomar, California and has been asked to teach there in 2014. Ann will also be teaching a guild workshop, which you can find more information in the workshop section of the newsletter. Check out more on Ann at www.annshawquilting.com/

May 13- Marsha McCloskey will be here from Eugene, Oregon. Marsha specializes in Feathered Star designs. She is a designer of quilt patterns, fabric, and quilting tools. Marsha also has published numerous books for quilters. Her first book, Small Quilts was published in 1981. Find out more about Marsha here: http://www.marshamccloskey.com/index.html

June 10- This month the Anniversary Program will be presented. The committee has been working hard. Please invite any past members, as they may enjoy this program.  Please have them RSVP to MBQG.30years@gmx.com

July 15- Don't forget your show and tell from quilt week!  Note that this is the 3rd Monday!

Workshops- Next Workshop is April 8 with Ann Shaw (www.annshawquilting.com)

Linda G.

We are looking forward to Ann Shaw’s Chicken Challenge workshop on April 8.  Following that, we have 12 people who have signed up for Marsha McCloskey’s Massachusetts Cross and Crown workshop scheduled for May 13.  We’ll be firming up the price for the workshop after the April meeting, so if you’ve been undecided about signing up, don’t delay.  Watch for the sign-up sheet at the April meeting.

Caring Corner

Libby S.

We were sorry to hear that Wynne O.’s niece from California passed away.  Alice Petersen fell recently and broke her knee cap and bumped her head.  Patricia Marie Ross, a former Guild member, passed away November 19, 2012.  Many will remember her as an avid quilter and a gracious and giving friend.  She will be buried at sea after a military memorial in June 2013.  The daughter of Rosemary French, a former guild member, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Rosemary moved to Nebraska and is living near her daughter, which will be a great comfort for all involved.

Quilt Show Boutique- Next Sew Day is April 23, 10-4:30 at Bend Parks and Rec

Mary Ann B., Lora F., Marie J., Jane G., Darlene P., Karen K. and Catherine A.

The Boutique is producing wonderful products to sell during the Guild Quilt Show in August.  In April, we have Joanne Myers demonstrating her place mats and small table toppers.  Please bring strips cut 1 ½” to 2 ½” and width of fabric.  This project lends itself to use of scraps that are the width of the fabric.

The other project for sewing is a request made by our President.  Shannon would like to purchase some microwave bowls, so we will be making them that day also.

If you would like to sew at home for The Boutique, please do so.  We would appreciate any items you can make.  Patterns may be requested from any of the committee members.

The fourth and final sewing day for The Boutique will be on April 23rd at Bend Parks and Rec Community Room at 799 SW Columbia Street.   The time is 10:00am until 4:30pm.  Please bring your lunch and beverages.  Anything to share will be accepted and enjoyed!

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) News- July 13

Martha S.

It was so wonderful to have Ann Richardson at our March meeting to share her heartfelt enthusiasm for the show and for the help that our Guild offers.  A clipboard was passed at two prior meetings but never made it around the whole room unfortunately.  We will try again at the April meeting or you can contact me (see roster)  if you’d like to help out.  IF you signed up on line, please let me know.  There was some glitch in the website recently and the quilt show office wants to recheck those entries.  We desperately need hostesses and monitors for the 3PM shift.  This gives you time for viewing the quilts, a nice lunch and chat with friends before starting your shift.  And, what’s also nice about this shift is that it’s a bit shorter than the earlier ones.  Of course, last year was exceptionally exciting with the afternoon rain, but I think Ann has been working on a guarantee of no rain for her last show as executive director.  So please, let’s help her out in the time slots she really needs and show that Mt Bachelor Quilters’ Guild cares!

Community Baby Shower- Bring donations to the April 8 Guild Meeting

Pris B. & Denise M.

A collection by Soroptimist International of Bend

(a nonprofit service organization)

This is our 8th annual collection!  We collect necessary baby supplies for mothers who cannot afford them.  Many women have no resources at all for their new baby.  Maybe she has fled domestic violence, or poverty has made it impossible to prepare for a baby.  In this economy, there are more needy families than before.

We’re asking our guild members to make a simple baby quilt or fleece blanket, or to knit/crochet a baby blanket, or to donate any new or used baby items.  Please bring your donations to the March, or April guild meeting, and we will give you a tax-receipt.  Later donations will be welcomed also – they will always be needed!  Right now, DHS needs toddler clothes for girls, sizes 2, 3, 4, 5.

Help women who are in need to celebrate their new babies!  Thanks!

A Request from a Guild Member

I am trying to see if any member has a July/August 1998 issue of Quit Newsletter Magazine.  I am missing some pages of Margaret Gutowsky's article on "Reversible Quilt As You Go".  In addition I do not want to spend $30 for the magazine on EBay.  Thank you.  MaryElla S. (maryella@bendbroadband.com).

A Quilt Request from the Community

The guild receives requests for raffle or auction quilts from time to time.  Many of these community organizations are worthy of support, but do not fit into the guild’s community quilts program for various reasons.  The board has decided that it would be appropriate to put the request in the newsletter so that our members who might have a suitable quilt can offer it to the organization directly.

Westside Village Magnet School (WVMS) has put out a request for a quilt that they can auction off at their fundraiser on April 20.  The fundraiser is called Westside Rhythm and Blues; the website for the event is http://www.vrb2013.com/ and includes an evening of dinner, music, and a raffle.  The quilt you provide might be used in a live auction or the silent auction depending on the type of items they receive.   Please contact Brenda Gessner at bjgessner@bendbroadband.com or 541-617-3970 if you have a suitable quilt that you would like to donate for the auction.
