Fat
Quarters for November are Christmas Prints
Message from the President
Martha S.
November is a great time
for saying Thank You to so many who have been coming to our guild meetings and
participating in our guild projects throughout the year, and thank the new
members who’ve joined us this year. It’s wonderful to see the diversity of such
talents in one room!
I have fantastic news.
The book fair event at Barnes and Noble held in October brought $562.50 to our
guild’s funds! So many customers commented on the fabulous quilts and kids
actually got to see how a quilt is made. Moreover, these folks mentioned the
guild when shopping and this brought our return dollars to the level we
achieved. This funding will help reduce our current year deficit and encourage
us to seek similar fundraising opportunities next year.
At our November meeting,
let’s see all those UFO’s that have become FFO’s ( finally finished opjects)
and your class and workshop creations. Perhaps you took a class last year and
just finished it this year. This is your show time as the program for November
is all about your quilty creations.
I hope to see you at Partners
in Care with a meeting start time of 6:45!
P.S. from our President: QuiltWorks is hosting a Community Event on
Saturday November 12th. Check out the information in Coming Events
below. It would be great if we could
have a presence there for part of the day to talk about membership, our
community quilt service and our education in schools projects and just have fun
meeting other community organizations. The event is running
from about 10-4.
During the event you’ll get to
see Janelle Rebick’s fabulous quilt collection as the featured quilter for the
month of November and get in the holiday spirit with another collection of
holiday inspired quilts. I hope you can try to get something
set up for this. I will be working on that day so can’t commit
myself. Please let me know if you can be there for a few
hours or even an hour. Thanks.
Important Reminders
The meeting begins at 6:45
pm. Unless you are assisting with setup,
please don’t enter the meeting room before 6:15 pm. When you arrive at the meeting, remember to
check-in at the membership table and pick up your door prize ticket if you are
wearing your cloth nametag. As always,
please turn your cell phones off during the meeting.
Refreshments
Mary Ann B. and Susan M.
Kathie S. and Gail K. have volunteered to bring beverages
and Pat R., Sharon S, Elizabeth E., and Susan M. have volunteered to bring
snacks for our November meeting. If anyone
finds they cannot bring what they volunteered to contribute, please call Susan
M. @ 389-7922. Thanks ladies.
Community Quilts
Mary T., Karen F, and Norma W.
Women
and children are still being abused; children are in the hospital; teen girls
are still having babies; people are near death; teenagers are trying to make a
new start. These are the true, cruel facts about our community, as well as
communities everywhere
It’s
wintertime, AND our quilt cupboards are almost bare—only 10 quilts reside
therein. We need 90 more to meet the expanding needs of our charities. What??
That’s RIGHT!!! Two of our agencies had none when we made our delivery a few
weeks ago. We’ll be making our year-end delivery around December 19. ‘Tis time
to get busy!
We
have: * batting; * many
pieces from which you may make a quilt * quilt ideas * backings * kits.
We need members to participate!!! About 20+ have donated ZERO. If you’ve
already made one quilt, please try to make another for our charities.
Community Quilts’ Day
for November is Wednesday, the 16th, from 11-3 at the Nativity Lutheran Church
(directions on the CommQlts page on the website). Sometimes we have 5-6 people
pinning all day; sadly, sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we have 10-15 people
sewing or binding, sometimes we don’t. Sooooo, please start a new project with
us, bring the one you’re working on and/or bring your finished quilt and pick
up fabrics for a new one. Also, bring BSS, lunch, beverage, and a food
donation. Sustenance and laughter are mandatory, of course.
New members, we’d love to see your smiling faces;
members that are not so new, we’d LOVE to see you, too!! Come one, come ALL!!
Continuing Monthly Food Drive
Norma & Sylvia
CORNY, BUT IT’S TRUE; need CORN, CORN, CORN. Please
bring a 14-16 oz. can of Whole Kernel Corn on Guild Night!!! Oh, if you don’t have time to buy CORN, make
it Canned Tomatoes!!! We’re prepared to leave the facility with 70-80 cans!!
Come On!! Make some people happy!!!!! Thanks!!!
Membership Information
Marie J.
We
have 4 new members that joined in October---WELCOME. This brings our
membership to 125 members. An updated roster will be sent to all
members in November so PLEASE double check all of your information to make
sure it is correct when you sign in at our next meeting.
Our Guild Library
Linda M.
The
books added to the library this month are Hawaiian Quilt Inspirations,
by Patricia Lei Miller (who spoke at a guild meeting recently) and City
Quilts, by Cherri House. The first book was purchased from our speaker at a
recent Guild meeting. The second book contains 12 dramatic projects inspired by
Urban Views; if you like modern looking quilts, you will want to check out this
book. Also added was Fabric in the Minds Eye, by Sharon L. Baker;
donated by the author who was one of the speakers at the Guild’s October
meeting. The November raffle book is Quilt Blocks Across America by
Debra Gabel. This book was donated for the raffle by a guild member; it
contains a pattern for each state and a CD which allows the user to print the
patterns in any size. Tickets are $1 each/6 for $5. In addition, we will have a
selection of books to check out.
PLEASE
RETURN ANY BOOKS THAT YOU HAVE HAD CHECKED OUT MORE THAN A COUPLE OF MONTHS AS
I WILL NOT BE PICKING UP BOOKS AT THE DECEMBER MEETING. Thank you for your
support of the Guild Library.
Program Information
Mary Ann B.
November-- Please bring items created in a Mount Bachelor
Quilt Guild workshop. We have had the Lorraine Torrence workshop, Jean Wells
workshop, and Baker and Bowles workshop this year. Remember the ones from
previous years: Kim Diehl, Jean Wells, the Bead Lady, etc.
December—The Christmas Party, please remember to make some
drawstring bags for our Christmas charity donations. When making the bags,
please use non-Christmas fabric. The drawstring bags are simple and fun to
make. Two can be made as easily as one! If you can donate some toiletries for
the bags, it would be appreciated. Small items or travel sizes would be
appropriate. Examples: shampoo, conditioner, combs, toothbrushes/paste/dental
floss, shower gel, soap, sewing kits, baby wipes/hand wipes, hand sanitizer,
deodorant, food coupons, or non-perishable food bars, gum. Please see below for directions for bags:
How to Make School and Health Kit Bags
Each year Mennonite Central
Committee sends thousands of school and health kits to needy people around the
world. Making the cloth kit bags is easy if you know how! Here's one good
method. For lists of kit contents, go to www.MennoniteWomenUSA.org/MCCkits.html.
School and health kit bags are now the same size.
Finished
size: 11" x 16"
Cut fabric: 12"
x 35" Cut two drawstrings: 32" 28 cm. x 40.5
cm. 30.5 cm. x 89 cm. 81 cm.
1. Cut rectangles of the
appropriate size, if possible using a pinking shears on the short sides. If
pinking shears aren't available and you have raw edges, fold down each short
end 1/8" (0.5 cm.) (wrong sides together) and stitch a narrow hem on those
two sides.
2.
Fold the material length-wise in half, right sides together. Use a
pencil to mark a 3/4" (2 cm.) gap that begins 11/2" (4 cm.) down each
side. These two marks show where the holes for the draw strings will be.
3.
Stitch down each side (1/2" seam allowance) (1.25 cm.), leaving a
gap where you have marked.
4.
Open your bag and spread out the material on both sides of the seam.
To make each drawstring hole extra strong, stitch around each hole, starting at
the top of the bag and going 1/2" (1.25 cm.) below the hole. (5. Fold
down the top of the bag 1 1/2" (4 cm.) (wrong sides together) and stitch
all the way around to form a casing for the drawstrings.
6.
Turn the bag right-side out; the drawstring holes are now on the
outside. Pull one drawstring through the casing the whole way around; knot the
two ends together. Repeat with the other string, starting at the opposite side.
Note on threading the
drawstrings: One method is to attach a safety pin to the string and push the
pin through the casing. But a simple tool will make help you thread much
faster. Take a thin wooden dowel or piece of plastic about 18" long. Tape
a paperclip to one end. This serves as the "eye" of what is now a big
needle to thread the drawstrings through the casing.

Workshops
Lisa N.
Thanks to all who participated in a Guild workshop
in 2011! We have more fun in store for 2012! Our first will be a workshop
with Elizabeth Hartman from Portland, Oregon. Her workshop, "Mod
Mosaic Floor Pillow" will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 from 1 - 4
p.m. at Bend Park and Recreation's Community Room. This three-hour
workshop will walk students through a fun and flexible improvisational piecing
technique with the goal of piecing the front of a 24" floor pillow cover.
The cost is $30 and sign ups will be available at the November meeting.
Or, contact Lisa N at Lnakadate@bendbroadband.com if
you are interested in attending. Elizabeth's website and blog can be
accessed at www.ohfransson.com.
She is an up and coming Northwest quilter!
Also, as part of our community outreach and
mission of educating the public on quilting, we are giving quilt presentations
to local elementary school students and those in Girl Scouts and Campfire.
Please let Lisa N. know if you are interested in giving a presentation -
do it on your own or pair up with a friend and get kids interested in quilts!
We have developed a curriculum and have materials for you to use - or you
can personalize the presentation and make it your own. Some teachers are
requesting a hands-on activity following the program which gives you an
opportunity to make quilting come alive to the kids. Please help us get
this program off the ground.
Quilt Retreat---2012
Jill M. and Barb P.
The 2012 Guild Retreat will take place at the
Seventh Mt Resort on March 23, 24 and 25 (Fri, Sat & Sun). Cost will be
$250 for three days sewing, two nights lodging, and meals (breakfast on your
own). Deposit is $100 with the balance due in mid February. So, bring those
UFOs to finish up.....or begin that 'just gotta make it' project. This year
there will be no group instructor, however, there will be lots of sewing/fabric
'tips and tricks' to add to your skill set. Call either Barb Perin or Jill
Monley with questions. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Nov. Guild
meeting so bring your check books - a $100 deposit holds your spot!
