Our Next Guild Meeting is Monday, February 13, 2012.
Fat Quarter drawing for February- They
Call it Puppy Love
Fat quarter themes are a little different this year. We’ll give you a
song title that should evoke a theme or idea. Use your imagination and have a
little fun. Bring your fat quarter to the meeting with your name pinned on or
you can use an address sticker.
President’s
Message
Martha
S.
“a sweater covered with thread snippets is a
sign of a happy quilter”
We simply love to quilt. How do we explain to non-quilters that we love
to take a piece of cloth, cut it up into a myriad of pieces, and then sew it
back together again? We are construction workers, needing a collection of tools
and rulers that a carpenter would envy. We have all sizes of rotary cutters we
use like saws. We are architects drawing out patterns and sketches. We are
surgeons with scissors and we suture our seams. We engineer our sewing machines
to get just the right tension and stitch. We use fabric to electrify our quilts
with light and bright mixed with dark and dusk. We are artists who dream in
color and cherish the freedom we use to design. We are mothers agonizing over
which fabric in our stash should be saved for next time and which should be
sent to our cutting mats to grow into a wonderful new design. We are
stockbrokers, willing to invest in that fabulous new fabric, risking that it
may be held in our stash. We simply love to quilt.
Notes: At
February’s meeting we’ll have our 2012 raffle quilt on display and hope to have
the raffle tickets available for you. This year the tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.
Don’t forget your membership dues if you haven’t already paid.
The board is still seeking volunteers for a variety of programs this
year – hospitality, fundraising and the craft project.
February 3rd is a big night for quilting in Bend with
several of our members showing quilts at Quiltworks and Arts Central and Bend
City Hall. If you haven’t seen the Journeys quilt group display at Sisters Art
Works, it’s a wonderful trip-worthy show.
Important
Reminders
The meeting begins at 6:45 pm.

Love". Be sure to thank our wonderful local businesses for providing door

2012 Quilt Retreat
Jill M.
and Barb P.
The Guild's 2012 Retreat is almost
here! There is still time to
register for the full retreat: two nights, three days, meals and SEWING, for
$250! This year it is also
possible to registration for day-attendance only: three days, meals, SEWING but
no overnight sleeping room for $150.
So, if you were thinking about participating, now is the time to send
your money and registration form.
For those of you who have paid a deposit, please know that the balance
of your registration fee should be paid by February 15. The annual Retreat is a wonderful time
to finish up UFOs, start/finish a new project, and sew - almost non-stop - with
other quilting friends. Please
call Barb P. or Jill M. with any questions! We are looking forward to hosting you at the Seventh Mt
Resort this March 23-25!
Community
Quilts
Karen F.
Community quilts meets on Wednesday, Feb. 15th at Nativity Lutheran
Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your basic sewing supplies and your lunch
and join in the fun! Thanks again for all of your time and effort last year. The
charities we donate to are always so happy to get your quilts. There is so much
need for them. Hope to see you there.
Community
Food Drive
Diana L.
At February’s meeting, please continue to bring canned peaches or pears for the food pantry. Canned food items are the best choice
for the pantry as the church can buy dried items such as rice and beans at very
low prices. They also received
donations of bread products and occasionally fresh fruits and veggies. Any food donations are accepted, but if
you don't have time to shop, please consider dropping a $1.00 in the box to
help the food pantry. Thank you.
Health Kit
Bag Update
Susan M. and Mary Ann B.
Thank
you for helping make over 120 Health Kit Bags
We want to thank everyone who helped make bags or contributed items for
our Health Kit Bags for the community, which were donated at our December
meeting. We were able to put together more than 120 kits!
We have distributed over half of them to Bethlehem Inn, Bend Community Center,
and Saving Grace. The remaining bags will be distributed through
the FAN advocates at local schools. Thank you again for your
generous help---we may have to do this project again sometime!
Our Guild Library
Linda M.
The February raffle book is Wonky One-Block Quilts by Marlous
Carter. This book highlights a simple technique that yields dramatic results. Raffle tickets are $1 each/6 for $5.
The book added to the library this month is: Hand-Appliqued Quilts: Whimsical Designs & Simple Techniques by
Tonye Belinda Phillips. In addition, we will have a selection of books to check
out and you may return any books previously checked out. Thank you for your
support of the Guild Library.

from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Bend Park and Rec's community room for modern cutting
and piecing techniques. The fee is

Don't miss the Kaleidoscopic Pinwheels
workshop with Maggie Ball from Bainbridge Island, Washington on Wednesday,
April 11, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will love creating these beautiful pinwheels
that were inspired by Bethany Reynold's Magic Stack 'N Whack. Maggie has devised a simple and
forgiving technique for making pinwheels that float on the background. The fee is $55. If interested, bring a check to the
February Guild meeting or send it to Lisa N. We hope you can join us!
2012 Quilt Challenge
Sylvia
K. and Janelle R.
The 2012 Quilt
Challenge promises to be a really fun and colorful event. We have decided to
have a theme of children’s story books. Participants choose a story from one of
their own favorites or one that they have read to anyone else. Picture books
and children's chapter books fit the criteria. Participants can use any type of
technique but all work must be done by only that person. The dimensions for the
quilt are to be a minimum of 36 inches on any side and a maximum of 60 inches
on any one side. We would like to exhibit the book along with the quilt. All
quilts entries are due on or before the July Guild Meeting.
The quilts will be
judged on best use of theme, quilting, and overall workmanship. They will also
be judged by the public at the 2012 Quilt Show in the Park for a Viewer’s
Choice award.
We look forward to
seeing many wonderful interpretations of some great children’s literature. If
you have any questions, please call Sylvia or Janelle.
Caring Corner
Libby S.
If you have any news among our guild members or
previous members, such as births, weddings, illness or passing, please contact
Libby S. 541-330-8186 (eseitz@bendbroadband.com)
and a card will be mailed on behalf of our Guild.
We are sorry to hear about the passing of Marie J.’s Mother-in-Law and
Kris L.’s Mother-in- law.
We are happy to hear about Joan and Gary W.’s 60th
anniversary on January 20th.
Community Baby Shower
Pris B.
Soroptimist International of Bend (www.sibend.org), a nonprofit service organization, is having its 7th annual Community
Baby Shower! We collect necessary
supplies for mothers who cannot afford them. Many women have no resources at all for their new baby. Maybe she has fled domestic violence,
or poverty has made it impossible to prepare for a baby. In this economy, there are more needy
families than before.
I’m asking our guild members to make a simple
baby quilt or fleece blanket, or to knit/crochet a baby blanket. Please bring your donations to the
April guild meeting, and I will give you a tax-receipt. Later donations will be welcomed also.
Help women who are in need to celebrate
their new babies! Thanks!
